Wine information and labelling: how far can we go?
The demand for information about food products is constantly changing. Alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, cider, spirits, etc.) are no exception to this trend, which raises a number of questions. What kind of information is required? At what level of detail? What communication channels can be used: labels, online information, etc.?
On 13 March 2017, the Commission forwarded to the European Parliament and the Council a report on the indication of the list of ingredients and the nutrition declaration on labelling. On the basis of this report, the professional sector of the various alcoholic beverages was invited to develop self-regulatory initiatives, which are now on the table of the commission. The fact remains that the expectations, perceptions and effects of information vary considerably from one consumer to another. In particular, the impact of nutritional information is highly heterogeneous, with sometimes unexpected effects. Labelling can also have a major impact on wine design, posing major challenges for oenology research. Scientific research and public regulation are now being put to the test...
