Passages, a human and social sciences laboratory, is a joint research unit of the CNRS, the Université de Bordeaux-Montaigne, the Université de Bordeaux and the École nationale supérieure d'architecture et de paysage de Bordeaux.

Its members come from a wide range of disciplines: geography and planning, sociology and anthropology, environment and landscape, urban planning and architecture. Their cohesion is built around the central place they give to space and territories in the questions they ask and in the objects they study. This cohesion is also built on a shared practice of research involving local players, whether the research is carried out in the South West, in France or abroad (Africa, the Americas, South Asia and Japan, Europe) and whether or not these players are institutionally recognised.

The projects carried out by Passages members are often characterised by the establishment of close forms of collaboration in the research process itself: participative and collaborative projects, co-construction between partners and involvement in action research. This commitment is part of a wider commitment to open science, in terms of knowledge production, dissemination of results and conservation of research data.
